Jim is the head of the Pike Store Cologne and he was so kind to answer our questions in a little interview. Have a look, what´s behind this friendly person…
Where are you from?
I´m from Charleston, South Caroline, United States.
What did you do before you started working at Pike Store?
For 25 years I worked as a professional tattooer. during my teenier as a tattooer i built a reputation for solid, clean and creative American Traditional Tattoos in Germany as well as the US.
What brought you to Germany?
After selling my tattoo shop in March of 2000 with the plan of traveling the world I began my journey. for a year I drove through America visiting many different landmarks and interesting places i had dreamt of seeing,as well as visiting many tattoo shops. I often worked for friends and also occasionally did a convention. After i received an invitation to visit Germany as a guest-artist I thought, “Why not?”.
after only a few days into my three month work/vacation I met the woman who would become my wife! it was love at first sight. I moved to Hamburg for good in October 2001. My wife and I are happily married and have two beautiful daughters.
What are your leisure activities ?
I´m interested in design and fashion. At the moment I’m learning how to sew. I’m also learning sign painting as well. Although I’ve given up tattooing art is still a part of my life. I enjoy painting and do graphic design as a freelancer. Of all my passions my family is the biggest. I’m a true family man and feel most happy when surrounded by them. whether hiking trails, combing the beach or just lounging about at home…Family First!
What´s your relation to Pike Brothers?
I suppose Pike represents a sort of traditional feeling for me. Something I feel has been lost over the years by so many manufacturers.
After moving to Germany it wasn’t easy saying goodbye to most of my favourite brands. I was constantly searching the internet, trying to order things that couldn’t be bought in normal clothing shops. I came across the 1937 Roamer Vest Elephant Skin Black and quickly found a new friend in Pike Brothers Garments! I never would have guessed that I’d end up working here. Only by a coincidence (or fate) I happened to meet the owners of Gents of Cologne and a week later stumble into Thomas as he was renovating the location that would be Pike Store Köln. Thomas invited me to the Grand opening party as a guest but I had already decided that I wouldn’t leave that party until I had a job!…and thats what happened
What is your favorite piece in the Pike collection?
At the moment my absolute favorite piece is 1958 Roamer Pant 23oz. The 1962 OG-107 is in second place. When I travel I’m sure to have my 1958 Roamer Vest and some Utility Shirts in the suitcase, I don’t leave home without them.
What is important to you in the shop?
A relaxed and friendly atmosphere is especially important to me. I try give our guests their space. It’s important to let them know that I am there if they need me but also to give them the room to breath. to let them move freely through the store and even help themselves if thats how they like it. I find this helps someone realise they are in a different kind of store altogether. Sometimes people come by just to say hello or to show me how the evolution of the jeans is coming along. I also enjoy creating a visual atmosphere and constantly change things around for a dynamic and interesting impression.
Where is the Pike Store in Cologne located?
The store is in the Belgian quarter – quite a cool corner, just a few meters from the “Ring”. We are off the beaten path but not far from the main shopping district.
Address: Pike Store Cologne, Limburger Str. 4, 50672 Cologne / Germany
What are the opening hours of the store?
Tuesday – Saturday from 11am till 7 pm.
Many thanks for the interview, Jim.
