The Baseball Shirt Evolution

From Wool to Cotton: The Baseball Shirt Evolution

The original baseball shirts weren’t built for comfort — they were built to last.

Early Major League Baseball players wore heavy wool jerseys that could handle the game, but not the summer heat. Durable, yes — comfortable, not so much.

Over time, things changed. Cotton replaced wool, bringing breathability and ease of wear to the field. What started as pure function evolved into something more — a balance of performance and comfort that still defines the baseball shirt today.

At Pike Brothers, we take that heritage seriously. Our baseball shirts stay true to the original designs — from raglan sleeves to classic silhouettes — but use modern cotton fabrics that make them wearable every day.
Whether it’s a clean long-sleeve shirt or a vintage-inspired jersey, these pieces carry the spirit of the game without the weight of the past.

For our customers who love to go with the rougher fabric, we still have our 1938 Baseball Jersey van Buren which ist made of 100% wool.

Built on history. Made for today.
