Hickory Stripe Brown
Hickory Stripe Brown – From Railroad Workwear to Military Classics
Hickory Stripe has its roots in late 19th-century America, where the hard-wearing cotton fabric became closely associated with railroad workers, engineers and mechanics. Its name refers to hickory wood, known for its strength and durability – qualities that perfectly matched the demands of everyday workwear.
The characteristic blue and white stripes were more than just a distinctive look. They also helped to disguise soot, oil and grease during long working days around steam locomotives and heavy machinery. By the 1920s, Hickory Stripe had become an established workwear fabric and an unmistakable part of American industrial clothing.
Our take on a workwear classic
For our Hickory Stripe Brown series, we took the traditional blue and white stripe and gave it a different character. The fabric is overdyed in brown, leaving the original stripe visible underneath while creating a warmer and more subtle appearance.
We use Hickory Stripe Brown across a range of garments, making it possible to combine the individual pieces into a complete outfit – just as workwear was worn back in the day.
All garments made from our Hickory Stripe Brown are pre-washed. This gives the fabric a softer feel from the start and creates a more comfortable, natural fit.
